The Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival 2025 marked a strong continuation of the festival’s second decade, reaffirming its position within the Dutch cultural landscape. Taking place over 10 days across multiple venues in Amsterdam, the festival welcomed more visitors than ever before and hosted 14 international guests, strengthening its role as a platform for Spanish and Spanish-language cinema.
ASFF 2025 presented a carefully curated programme that combined contemporary Spanish films with contextual events, premieres and in-depth discussions. With the introduction of the Honorary Gieling Award and an expanded range of special events, the festival further deepened its commitment to cultural exchange, artistic quality and meaningful dialogue through cinema.
From the 4th until the 13th of April, the 11th edition of the Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival took place in Amsterdam and Haarlem, starting our second decade of celebrating Spanish cinema in the Netherlands.
One month prior to the festival, the festival program was presented during the annual Launch event: a sold out screening in Pathe Tuschinski of the film CASA EN LLAMAS.
The festival kicked off with a double opening night with a musical theme: the first film we screened was the film SEGUNDO PREMIO by Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodriguez. Actor Cristalino joined for a Q & A with the audience afterwards. This screening was hosted by the province of Granada. Afterwards, the documentary LA GUITARRA FLAMENCA DE YERAI CORTÉS was screened, followed by a Q & A and live performance of Yerai Cortés and La Tania.
This festive evening was the start of ten days of unique screenings, special events and the visit of many special guests to the festival.
In the end, the ASFF took place at five different festival venues, we welcomed 14 special guests to Amsterdam and received more visitors than ever before.
During the screenings, the ASFF focussed on several unique themes within the program lines, fortifying our section “Spain Meets the Netherlands” where we screened co-productions like MUY LEJOS / ZO VER WEG by Gerard Oms and WHEN CHUECA DIES by Ramon Gieling. In relation to this, we created a new yearly ASFF tradition, the Honorary Gieling Award, which every year will be given to a unique voice in Spanish cinema. This year, the award was given to Iciar Bollaín, honoring her body of work and specifically her latest project: SOY NEVENKA.
Furthermore, we hosted more special events than ever before, including an official afterparty at Murmur in Amsterdam Noord, a traditional VERMUTADA in LAB111, a special Air Europa Event in collaboration with The Latin Experience featuring a live tango performance and a successful evening with the Colombian Embassy. All in all, it was an unforgettable edition and a promising start of our second decade.
