
Isabel Coixet (Barcelona, 1960) is one of the most internationally recognized Spanish film directors of contemporary cinema. She studied History at the Universitat de Barcelona and began her career working
Her first feature film was Demasiado viejo para morir joven (1989), but she gained wider international attention with Cosas que nunca te dije (1996), which was filmed in English. Her films are known for their intimate storytelling, emotional depth, and focus on complex characters and human relationships.
Some of Coixet’s most notable films include My Life Without Me (2003), The Secret Life of Words (2005), Elegy (2008), Map of the Sounds of Tokyo (2009), Yesterday Never Ends (2013), Nobody Wants the Night (2015), and The Bookshop(2017), based on the novel by Penelope Fitzgerald. Throughout her career she has frequently worked with international actors and has often filmed in English, which has helped her reach a global audience.
Coixet has received numerous awards, especially at the Premios Goya. The Secret Life of Words won several Goya Awards including Best Film and Best Director, while The Bookshop also received major awards such as Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Her work has also been recognized at international film festivals, highlighting her important contribution to European cinema.
