Following Marshland and Smoke & Mirrors, award-winning director Alberto Rodríguez is back with Prison 77, a powerful dive into the Spanish penitentiary system just after the end of the dictatorship in 1977, a turbulent moment of newfound freedom when the fate of political prisoners was somehow forgotten. Written by Rodríguez and his regular collaborator, Rafael Cobos, Prison 77 delivers a richly populated time capsule starring Javier Gutiérrez (Below Zero) and Miguel Herrán (Money Heist, Elite) making it one of the most acclaimed thrillers in Spanish cinema in recent years.
Barcelona, 1977 during the transition to democracy. Manuel (Herrán), is a young accountant imprisoned and awaiting trial. He faces an extensive sentence, disproportionate to the crime of embezzling the equivalent of 1,200 Euros.
Aided by his cellmate Pino (Javier Gutiérrez), Manuel joins forces with a collective fighting for the rights of prisoners. Together they create a movement that will unite all prisons in the fight for freedom and change prison laws and society forever.
A rich time capsule inspired by true events, Prison 77 is a powerful dive into the Spanish penitentiary system, during a turbulent moment of newfound freedom at the end of the dictatorship. Filmed in the legendary Modelo prison in Barcelona, this tale of friendship, solidarity and freedom is one not to miss.
